In Korean society, a man and a woman with similar backgrounds never work out in a purely romantic fashion. Yes, a rich man can marry a rich woman and form and maintain a family. However, the inner workings of that relationship is always twisted and full of strife which commonly leads to one of the two having an affair. That adulterer is usually the husband since Korean man are horny and insecure but Korean wives are not without their weaknesses. Independent from who has the affair, the person who that party is cheating with is usually from the wrong side of the tracks. By that I mean poor. That is just how fate works here in Korea at least for men. They want to slum it and think it is love. Han Ji-hoon is no exception as he seemed fated to bump into Kang Hye-Soo, a poor single mother of a 7 year old girl called Shin Rin-Ah.

So, who is Kang Hye-Soo? Well, compared to Han Ji-hoon, her childhood was rather normal. She was the only daughter of two loving parents. Then, things all changed on high school. That is usually how it goes for “candies” and Kang Hye-Soo is definitely that!

Interview:
--- Hwang Joo-Yeon, Nail ship owner and friend of Kang Hye-Soo
We met and became friends on the first day of high school. We sat alongside each other in class and hit it off right away. What was she like? She was this lively and kind girl back then. I mean she is still kind now but life has knocked some of the liveliness out of her over the years.

Before the tragedy, we had fun! Our high school’s uniforms were quite cute and we looked good in them. The boys were all over us. I’m a bit older now but I was quite popular with the guys. Kang Hye-Soo was not ugly but I was the hot one in the relationship. She was my sidekick. Just look at her when she was in high school!

And she was a very dedicated sidekick. She used to do my homework for me and break up with guys for me. You could always trust her to get things done. What was her hobbies? I’m not sure. It was a long time ago. Mmm… We usually would do stuff I liked. So, not really sure what she was into. I mean she cooked for me a lot as my parents worked and tended to come home really late. But not sure if I could call that a hobby.

Early in our senior year, her parents died in an accident and Kang Hye-Soo became an orphan. She didn’t have any close relatives. Because of this, she had to give up going to college and found work. And it was a shame. She got pretty good grades. I mean I didn’t really do well in school and I went to college…not a great one but I did go. Kang Hye-Soo did far better than me in school. It is a tragedy really…I want to cry when I think about the time I helped out at her parents wake. She was all alone without anyone to help. After high school, I kept in touch. I wasn’t going to be the kind of friends that forgets her friends. Eventually she met her husband and I wished her life would be better from then on. But life seems to have decided that she needed to be punished more.

After high school, Kang Hye-Soo worked as a waitress for years saving up in order to put herself through night culinary school. Her goal was not big. She wanted to be a chef who makes her customers happy and ultimately have her own little restaurant near a residential area. She dreamt of waking up early every day and opening up her restaurant to service the morning crowd with takeout food. One thing she didn’t really let herself think about was love. Then, she met her soon to be husband when he walked into the restaurant she was working at one day. In the following weeks, he started to come by every day until she gave in and went out on a date with him. After a few months, they got married. That was about 8 years ago

Their short married life was…turbulent as her husband’s business was failing and her mother-in-law disliked her. However, this all ended when the husband died out of the blue. And 8 month later, Kang Hye-Soo gave birth to a girl.

Interview:
--- Oh Eui-Sik, Assistant chef and former co-worker of Kang Hye-Soo
Yes, I used to work with Kang Hye-Soo. Let me think…That was about 2 years ago. I was at a restaurant called “Ssun” at the time. It was owned by Chef Kang Sun-Woo. You might remember him as he was on TV at the time a lot. He was quite famous then. Kang Hye-Soo was hired as kitchen support staff. We were all males at the time so I remember her well. The guys were excited before we knew she was taken. I mean by her kid. She was a 26 or 7 year old single mom. She wasn’t ugly looking but dating a single mom…that can get tough. It didn’t help that she didn’t have much of a personality from what I could see. She had her kid and her work. That was the only thing!

How long was she there? About 5 or 6 months if I recall. And she was not bad at her job. I remember the lunches she would prepared for the staff. She still had a lot to learn but her cooking was decent. Nothing spectacular like her personality but solid However, I have to admit she wasn’t going to go far there. .As a single mom, she couldn’t give the dedication demanded by the chef to proceed along her training. While some may complain and some did, I understand her predicament. My mother raised me alone too. And know how hard it is to be a single mother especially with an infant kid.  Shin Rin-Ah? That baby was quite cute! How old would she be now? About 6 or 7?

Kang Hye-Soo brought the kid around a few times when she couldn’t find a sitter. Beautiful kid and such good temperament. She didn’t cry much. If she did, the owner would have gotten rid of her much faster than he ultimately would. He was somewhat of a dick and didn’t like kids. I felt sympathy for a situation and tried to help out when I could. I even baby sat a few times too! I wasn’t romantically interested in her but we should help out single moms. That is my philosophy!

Eventually, Kang Hye-Soo got fired when some thugs from a collection agency came by and made a ruckus. Punks! It seems that her dead husband died with a lot of debt which he owed to a loan shark. After she got fired, I never saw the mother and daughter again. But…

At the end, it wasn’t too much of a loss for her.”Ssun” closed down about a year later anyway. Why? It is a long story. But the short story is something like this. Chef Kang Sun-Woo hired a replacement for Kang Hye-Soo called Na Bong-Sun. Another woman but younger. Much younger. And the two developed a relationship. What he didn’t really know at the time was Na Bong-Sun was crazy! I mean straight jacket nuts! I think she had Bipolar or split personality Disorder. Something like that. In any case, she really messed the chef up which led to drinking. A lot of drinking. Eventually, chef developed a substance abuse problem. The restaurant when belly up after that. But that is not related to Kang Hye-Soo. How is she doing?

Fate tends to enjoy torturing those that can take the punishment. A “Candy” is not many things but definitely can take the punishment. That is their only strong suit after all. They are not particularly smart, cunning, or even wise. But they can take all that fate can toss at them until fate gives and sends good fortune their way. Well, some of the time. Not all “Candies” are made equal. What about Kang Hye-Soo?
